Bring what you already have

Import your existing files into a new organisation and split them between the org-wide brain and brains for each team.

If your team already keeps its knowledge in markdown, you can bring it in when you set up your organisation. ako reads the files and suggests how to split them: what everyone needs goes in the org-wide brain, and what one team owns gets a brain of its own. You change whatever you like, and nothing is created until you confirm.

You can do this once, while your organisation has no brains besides the org-wide one. After that, import into a brain instead: see Import existing files.

Before you start

  • A plan. Importing this way needs one. If your organisation doesn't have a plan yet, ako says so and sends you to Settings → Billing to start one.
  • A role that can add brains. The person who created the organisation has one.
  • Your files: markdown or plain text (.md, .markdown, .txt), as files, a folder or one zip. Or a GitHub repository.

Bring your files

  1. When you create your organisation, choose Bring what we already have, then select Create org & bring your knowledge. See Create your organisation.
  2. Under Bring what you already have, choose where the files come from:
    • Upload files: drag in your files, a folder or a zip, or use Choose files or Choose a folder.
    • Import from GitHub: pick the repository, branch and folder, then select Read this source. If GitHub isn't connected yet, select Connect GitHub first. An import from GitHub is a one-time copy: later changes in the repository don't reach your brains.
  3. Check the files. ako shows how many are ready, and lists any it skipped with the reason, such as an image or a file that's too large.
  4. Optionally, tell ako how your organisation works under Anything Ako should know about how your organization works? For example: "12 of us. Engineers build client websites; two people sell and manage client work."
  5. Select Suggest a split.

ako works through your files and shows each step as it goes. It usually takes 10 to 30 seconds. Making the suggestion doesn't use your AI credits.

Review the split

Under Here's how Ako would split it, your brains are listed down the left, with the org-wide brain first. Select one to see its folders and files.

To change a brain:

  • Edit a new brain's short name and what it's for. The description becomes the brain's own README.
  • Select Remove to drop a new brain. Its files move to the org-wide brain.
  • Select Add a brain for one ako didn't suggest. One import can create at most 8 new brains, and never more than your plan allows (as of 2026-10-15).

To move files:

  • Select Move… on a file and pick a brain and folder.
  • Select Move folder… to move a folder and everything in it to another brain.
  • Tick files, or tick one and shift-click another to select everything between them. Then use Move to… or Leave out in the bar that appears.
  • Select + Folder to add a folder to the brain you're looking at.
  • Select Leave out to skip a file. Find it again under Left out, and select Put back to bring it back.

To find files, type in the search box (press / to jump to it), or use the filters: Flagged, Moved by you and Rerouted.

Files kept for reference

Some files can't go where they were put. A file headed for a brain's settings or routines, for the org-wide brain's skills or instructions, or named like a set of agent instructions (AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules and similar) is kept in sources/imported/ instead. You'll see these under that folder, each marked Rerouted with the reason. They're there to read, not to act as instructions.

Checks on your files

As of 2026-10-15, these checks are in beta.

While you review, ako checks each file for two things. The line above your brains says when it's done and how many files are worth a second look. Flagged files are shown first in their brain.

  • Reads like instructions to an AI: part of the file seems to tell an AI agent what to do, or how to get around a review. ako quotes the part it means. Select Keep it if the file is fine, or Leave out to skip it.
  • Might fit better in another brain: select Move it there, or leave it where it is.

ako only flags a file when it is at least 80% sure, and shows how sure it is, for example "92% sure". A flag never moves a file or leaves it out: you decide. In a very large import the checks may cover only some of the files, and the line above your brains says so. You can create your brains without waiting for the checks to finish.

Create your brains

Select Create at the bottom of the page. The button says how many brains and files: for example, Create 2 brains & import 48 files. Nothing is created until you select it.

To check it worked, go to Knowledge. Your new brains are listed beside the org-wide brain, each with its folders, and every brain has its own agent instructions and a ground-truth folder.
