# Publish your docs

Your public docs brain is a draft. Publishing puts the whole draft live
at once, pages and site settings together. Each publish is numbered, so
you can always go back.

Admins, the owner, and anyone [given publishing rights](/public-docs/choose-who-can-publish)
can publish. The assistant and routines never can.

## Publish

1. Open the public docs brain under **Knowledge**. The **Draft** box at
the side says whether the draft and the live site match.
2. Select **Review & publish**.
3. On the **Publish** tab, read the changes. Each file is marked
**New**, **Edited** or **Removed**, with what changed beside it.
4. Select **Publish these changes**, or **Review first publication** the
   first time.
5. Check the summary, then select **Publish**.

ako confirms with "Published. Your changes are live as #" and the
publication's number. Select **View live site** to see it.

If someone saves an edit while you're reviewing, ako stops you and shows
the latest changes. Review them again before you publish.

Removing a page from the draft removes it from the site when you next
publish. Anyone following an old link gets a "not found" page.

## Restore an earlier version

1. On the publish page, select the **History** tab.
2. Find the publication you want and select **Restore…**.
3. Select **Restore** to confirm.

The live site goes back to that publication, settings included. Your
draft doesn't change, so anything unpublished in it stays there.

## Take the site offline

1. On the **History** tab, find **Take the site offline**.
2. Select **Unpublish site…**, then **Unpublish the site**.

Every page comes off the site, and readers see a page saying there are
no docs here. Your draft and history are kept, and you can publish again
at any time.

## Keep it out of search engines

Before your docs are ready to be found, turn off **Let search engines
index this site** on the **Settings** tab. People with the link can
still visit. This takes effect straight away, without publishing.
